The Greedy Tortoise
In the times of our great ancestors, there lived a tortoise and his son. Fall had just arrived and the animals were starting to stock up on their resources in order to survive the great winter. The tortoise was very, very greedy and had continued on living by stealing from those around him. His neighbors could not stand this any longer so they asked the great spirits to help them. The spirits had sent a wise Raven to give the tortoise a challenge. The old raven went down to the land of the living and dared the tortoise to find more acorns than him in an hour. The Raven knew that the Tortoise would want to get all the acorns that he could find, so the Raven made a trail leading to the edge of the water. The tortoise fell into the trap, filling his shell with so many acorns that his shell cracked and all the acorns fell into the water, but as the tortoise tried to reach for the acorns he fell into the water. The Raven took his son into the land of the sky. The spirits put all of them into the sky to remind all to take only as much as you need. |
That One Guy Named Carl
Bzzzzzzz, the microphone went as the judges read from that piece of paper in pure disbelief. Tension rose upon the enormous crowd and whispers filled every space in the theater. Finally, a judge picked up that microphone and announced the annual spelling bee winner. It was me. I had always been the quiet, shy person in our class. I am the last person you’d expect to win a spelling bee filled with thousands of people. I had once gotten so anxious that I cried in front of my class during MY own presentation. I had to take a couple of days off, having my classmates email me all the homework. The judge stood and handed me that gold painted aluminum trophy. It was beautiful, people chanted my name and my classmates poured into the stage to shake my hands. But suddenly, people burst into laughter. I joined in too just to try and fit in with the crowd, but it was obvious that they were laughing at me. I didn’t know why until l looked down, then l saw, that I didn’t have any pants!!!!!! The shame filled every vein and artery of my body. I turned apple red in seconds. I smiled awkwardly to try and signal to the judges to help get me offstage. The audience’s laughter rose into a great roar until I noticed that one by one all my teeth fell out. I turn an even brighter shade of red as the embarrassment grows. Then, my legs started to feel warm as I notice a strange, somehow wet feeling on my thighs. The world started spinning around and I lost track of where I was. Laughter echoed in my head. Then I woke up. |
Dear Future Child,
As the sun descends in the horizon, gunfire continues from both sides. For all this time I have never heard a tiny sliver of silence. I wish I could rest for just a while, but this constant chaos has kept me too paranoid to close my eyes. I am glad you kids get to go to school, and not have to worry about anyone trying to overrun your country and take away your rights and freedom. Y'know, I always dreamed of getting to travel the roads, with the wind in my hair, or to travel the skies with one of them biplanes that the pilots are using right now.
But my choice to come here has made that dream close to impossible. Do not feel bad for me, however, as it was my choice to fight for my country, to defend all its people, to ensure that their rights are protected. I chose to come here to protect the rights that you so enjoy today. There are scars imbedded within my heart and mind, but that is the price that I so proudly chose to pay. |
